What does a business coach do?

If you’ve ever searched something like,  “Should I hire a business coach?” you’re not alone.

Many small business owners feel overwhelmed and want someone to help them see the bigger picture, keep them on track, and give them practical steps to grow. That’s often when they start looking for a business coach.

But here’s the thing… if you already have a good accountant, you might not need a separate business coach.

Accountants Aren’t Just for Tax

Traditionally, accountants were seen as the people you go to for year-end accounts, VAT and tax returns. But that’s just compliance. The truth is, many modern accountants can support you strategically, financially, and even emotionally as a business owner.  They help you understand your numbers, make sense of your finances, and plan what’s next, not just tidy up what’s happened.

In many ways, they are business coaches, just with the numbers to back it all up.

At Fresh Clarity, we work closely with small businesses (especially in the care sector) to provide clarity, control and confidence. We help you understand your numbers, spot opportunities, and build a sustainable, profitable business without the overwhelm.

SO, can your accountant be your business coach?

Here are some key questions to ask your accountant to find out:

1. Do you support other businesses in my industry?

If the accountant understands the specific challenges of your sector, they’ll be able to offer better insight and tailored advice.  Someone who knows your industry can spot patterns and pitfalls before you do.

2. What’s your niche?

A specialist accountant will likely have a better understanding of the pressures, patterns, and growth opportunities in your line of work.

3. Do you offer advisory services or just compliance?

Some accountants go beyond filing returns and offer things like budgeting, forecasting, cashflow planning, and strategic support. Tax returns are important, but budgeting, forecasting and strategy sessions are where the magic happens.

4. Can you help me set and track business goals?

A good accountant won’t just say, “You made a profit.” They’ll help you figure out why and how to do it again. If your accountant can turn your numbers into an action plan, they’re adding serious value.

5. What are your qualifications?

Look for accountants with recognised qualifications and up-to-date training. Some will also have coaching skills or management experience.

6. Do you have testimonials or social proof from similar clients?

This shows whether they’ve successfully helped others like you and gives you confidence in their approach.

When you might still want a business coach

There are times when a business coach is still the right fit, especially if you’re working through mindset challenges, personal development, or want intensive weekly support.

But if your main concern is clarity, growth and keeping control of your finances, a good accountant might be the best coach you didn’t know you had. (they might even save you a fair bit of money in the process).  The trick is finding someone who gets what you’re trying to build and helps you actually get there, without adding more noise.

Don’t forget, there are other organisations to support your business, such as the Federation of Small Business (FSB).

Some local authorities also offer advice and free training, such as The Marches Growth Hub  if you are in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin or Hereford.
