September Is The New January: Get Your Business Finances Sorted Before Year-End

There’s something about September, isn’t there. The kids go back to school, the shops fill up with new stationery, and suddenly you feel like tidying the junk drawer and starting fresh.  To me, it feels like a better time to make a fresh start. January arrives in the dark, everyone’s skint after Christmas, and nobody has the energy for big changes.

September is different. It’s the perfect moment to sort your business finances before the last stretch of the year gets away from you, because right now you’ve still got time to put things right before the Christmas break, the January rush, or your year end catches you off guard.

Why This Feels Like The Real Fresh Start

If you came up through your trade or your craft rather than through finance, the numbers side of the business was probably never the bit you loved. You got busy doing the actual work, and the invoicing, the admin, the “I really should look at that” pile grew quietly in the background. That’s not a character flaw. It’s just what happens when you’re running a business and doing the job at the same time.

September gives you a natural reset point. Term starts, routines return, and there’s a genuine window here to put a few simple systems in place before everything gets swallowed by the busiest months of the year.

The Simple Systems Worth Putting In Place Now

You don’t need anything complicated. You need a few habits that stop the small stuff from becoming a big stressful pile later.

Start with invoicing. If you’re sending invoices whenever you remember rather than on a set day each week, that’s the first thing to fix. Pick a day, put it in the diary, and treat it the same as any other appointment. Chasing money you’re owed shouldn’t feel awkward or optional.

Next, give yourself one proper look at the numbers every month. Not a five-minute glance at the bank balance, an actual sit down with your figures, even if it’s just twenty minutes with a cup of tea. If you’re on Xero or QuickBooks, this is far easier than it sounds.

Finally, set money aside for tax as you go, rather than scrambling for it later. A separate pot or account that you move a percentage into each month means the tax bill stops being a nasty surprise and becomes something you already planned for. HMRC’s own guidance on payments on account is worth a read if you’ve never looked at how your tax bill is actually calculated.

The Numbers You Should Actually Know Each Month

I find that most business owners can tell you their turnover without blinking, but turnover isn’t the number that matters. Being busy and being profitable are two completely different things, and it’s entirely possible to be run off your feet and still not making the money you think you are.

Profit is the first number worth knowing properly. That’s what’s actually left once everything is paid, not just what’s landed in the bank this week. Alongside that sits your cash position, which is simply what you’d have in the bank right now if every invoice stopped tomorrow. It sounds obvious, but very few owners can answer it without checking.

Then there’s your cash flow forecast.  This is a rough look at what’s coming in and going out over the next month or two, so nothing catches you off guard. Your tax set-aside is worth tracking too, so you always know roughly what you owe before the bill lands. And the one almost nobody looks at is how quickly your invoices actually get paid. If money is sitting unpaid for weeks longer than it should, that’s cash flow stress you’re creating for yourself without realising it.

None of these need a finance degree to understand. They need about half an hour a month and someone to explain them in plain English the first time round. (These are the figures we send our clients every month as standard within our xxx package)

What This Actually Buys You Before Christmas

Get this sorted in September and the difference by December is real. Invoices go out on time, so cash isn’t tight when you need it most. You walk into your year end already knowing roughly where you stand, instead of dreading what your accountant is about to tell you. And the constant background hum of “I really should look at that” finally goes quiet.

That’s the whole point of a fresh start. Not a total overhaul, just a few habits that mean the business runs you a little less.

If you want a proper look at where your business actually stands right now, our free Health Check walks through exactly this,  with no jargon and no obligation. Get in touch and we’ll get you sorted before the year gets away from you.
